New Month

Ok, September isn't actually over but in terms of school I'm on to doing October's assignments. I am actually caught up in Java thanks to the help of a friend's friend (who is a programmer) & my husband, Andrew. He took C++ about 10 years ago in high school & as such is familiar with programming. He's basically been my professor since my actual professor isn't much help.

With that said, my classes are going alright. I had my first exam for my Web Design class. I am a terrible tester and as such got a 77.8% out of 100%. Sad since all my homework grades are 100% & the class as a whole is rather easy! Oh well!

On October 11th the midterm exam review starts for my Web Scripting Languages. Seems so soon but I guess that's about right as classes end around December 18th.
That class is going alright but I'm a little worried about being tested on Javascript since we haven't had any homework on the reading assignments (which I'm a chapter behind on).

On a slightly related note, I got a check from the Commonwealth of Virginia for about $222 as excess money from my grants that I didn't use. (Could've used that on books!) I'm a little worried about the money because I thought whatever money you didn't use with the grants was sent back to whatever government it came from (in this case, state). *sigh* Guess not? I'll stick it in my saving's account to be safe....

Problems with Java

It's no secret that Java is seriously stumping me. It's getting really crazy, though! I am unable to complete an assignment that was due today. I've read the chapter and I'm seriously stumped. I don't have a counter on here (though I should put on up) so I'm not sure if anyone (aside from welshcake of course!) actually read this. I thought I'd take a stab though & see if someone can help me.

Note: I've emailed my professor but haven't received a reply yet. I hate being so behind in this class! >:O

So... after the cut!

Javascript and CSS

Well, I'm currently stuck on my 2nd Java assignment. I'm not sure how to get text that a user has typed to print out to the screen in first all lowercase letters then all uppercase letters. If anyone knows, please lend a hand ;)

My CSS assignment for my Web Scripting Languages class was a wee bit more difficult than I imagined. The professor wanted us to create an external style sheet for the table we did last chapter. I was like, oh cool no prob I can do that with my eyes closed. No. Not so much. I could figure it out if I could do in the HTML document but the external gave me a bit of grief. Needless to say, I finally figured it out and it's all done. Though it's not as pretty as I'd like, I don't really have the time to make it all lovely. Assignment accomplished!
This weeks' chapter is on Javascript! I've done a little practicing here. It makes me laugh. Please to be enjoying my awesomeness! :D

Console Input and Output

As someone who is not academically inclined, I need to take frequent breaks from my homework. Now is one such break (actually, when I'm done with this I'll have to go to work ;).
First off, I'd like to say that I reply to comments. Right now welshcake is the only person who comments but, I thought I'd just throw that out there ;)

Today's post is about Java. Java is a pain in my ass. I don't get it. Right now everything I'm learning seems like it would easier to do in (X)HTML! I've been rather behind on my Java class, but I'm slowly catching up & as of today, I am nearly done with my assignment that is due tomorrow. (The assignment is 2 programs, one of which I've written & am about to post about...)

But, I'll post all that after the break. I don't want the page to get too long ;)

Beginning of week 3

It's the beginning of week 3 for me with my classes. My Web Design I class is going fine (as I thought it would). My JAVA class is up in the air. I keep debating on dropping it. I am not very academically inclined & I'm wondering if I can keep up with the pace of 3 online classes. It causes me some panic and dread.
I thought my Web Scripting Languages class was going alright. I was a little confused as to why there were no assignments other than readings, though. Lo and behold when I signed in to the school website today, there was an assignment due on the 31st! Oh shit! So embarrassing! I am never late with anything! I completed and submitted it right away, asking my professor if he would accept it with the promise of not turning anything in late again. He (thankfully!) accepted it and graded it without penalty & kindly reminded me my next assignment is due tomorrow. I've completed half of it but I still need to read the chapter, go over whatever notes he has and complete the 2nd half of the assignment. It's something to do with tables. I barely remember tables. I really need to brush up on my (X)HTML. I guess that's the point in going to school though, huh?

Typical welcome post

This is just your typical welcome post. This is where I introduce myself and what I'm about. A bit, anyways.

My name is Genevieve, I am 25 years old, I was born on the first day of the Virgo- Libra cusp, I am married (2 years on 2010 August 7!) & I have a very fat cat named Mouse.

Right now I am taking 3 classes at Northern Virginia Community College: Web Design I, JAVA I & Web Scripting Languages. It was my WSL professor that first suggested that I start a blog to chronicle my progress through school. I was a little hesitant at first but then thought, oh why not? I used to blog ages ago. I ran a little place called Last Stop Suburbia that became quite popular for while. After a little over a year, I moved on over to Collateral Damage. I got bored with blogging and quit about 18 months ago. Lets see if I can keep this up, huh? I don't think it will be too difficult since it doesn't follow the format of my other blogs. LSS was all about randomness but nothing too personal. CD got way more personal. This blog will just be me writing about my experiences and frustrations with school. Nothing more, nothing less.

Let's get a little background info on my situation, shall we? You might be wondering why I'm 25 and going to school for only a certificate. I've spent many a year in community college (first started in 2002 at Salt Lake Community college as a film major) without accomplishing much. I've always just kind of floated around, done whatever. Now I am married and while I don't feel any need to "settle down" I do feel a need to contribute as much as possible. My husband is currently going for a BS in Chemistry at George Mason University. He's starting his junior year and we are basically living off his GI Bill. We are living at my grandma's (horror of all horrors) and paying her $100 in rent a month. Even this is a stretch for us. I am working part time at a crappy retail job and 1 day a week for a bookkeeper for a privately- owned restaurant in McLean, Virginia.
I'd been feeling for a while like I ought to contribute more to my husband's & my income so I decided to go back to school. I decided web design because I've always enjoyed writing out code and seeing it turn into something amazing. (Right now I am using the HTML editor and FYI, all my links are always target="_blank" so no need to right- click ;) The certificate is 8 classes long. I've already tested out of the required English class so that leaves 7.
This semester I am trying to take 3 but I'm not sure that's going to last. More about that next post, though. I think this one has gone on long enough. If you've read this far, many thanks.

Until next time!
